What's In A Name?

Two designs made to introduce myself for a 2D visual design class. Made by cutting black construction paper. (The origin of my website logo!)

The first step in my process was listing out several words that came to mind when I thought of "Jasmine". My initial thoughts were things like the Disney princess, the flower, jazz and rice. Oddly all of these things ended up somewhere in one piece or the other.

I designed the white square first, using the imagery of the flower and a very simplified French horn. Through this piece, I wanted to convey my love of music (especially Electro Swing), but I also wanted to show how I've grown from a bit of a shrinking violet to blossoming into a more confident person.

The second design featured a braided (rice) field made of Jasmine vines, the lamp from Aladdin and a border resembling a Persian rug. Furthermore, I designed the handle on the lamp to look more like an eighth note.

This piece took a few more iterations, but in the end came out pretty well. This design was greatly influenced by Aladdin due to the fact that my brothers named me after the princess and because of my personal love of Disney movies.

Beyond this, I thought it would've been cool to have the lamp act doubly as a sun and watering can in the scene.

You may recognize the first design. It's since been repurposed for the icon for this website with a few modifications. After cleaning up some of the imperfections expected from an image trace of my knifework, I wanted more focus to be on the blossoming flower horn rather than the pipes that wouldn't read very well as a tiny favicon.
